What *AM* I missing that seems to have taken over my flist?

Something by the guy who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I guess Firefly was the TV show, and Serenity is the movie spinoff that came out today, or something. Don't really know, don't really care, because I tried to like Buffy for the sake of a few on my friends list, but I just thought it sucked horribly. :P

I never watched Buffy (I don't watch much TV at all actually. I never have control of ye old boob tube.)

That's probably why I missed it/not heard of it.

Basically the only TV I watch is what I download on my computer, ie Anime. Most of (All of) the Time the TV is "PWNED" by the parental units and mass amounts of CSI, MONK, and courtTV are continually going on in the living room and the audio filters into where I'm permanently camped out in the office.

Yeah, I don't watch TV either. Too passive for my liking. If I'm going to be sitting in front of a screen, it's going to be with a video game console hooked up, so that I can actually be DOING something. (Even if it's something stupid, like rolling thumbtacks and mice into a ball.) Can't stand just sitting and watching... which is why I don't go to movies either. ;)

Same way for me with anime though. GB is the only series I liked enough to make the effort to download. ;)

*points at icon* This is Captain Malcolm Reynolds. He's dreeeeaaamy!

*ahem* Firefly was the series - only lasted for 13 episodes before it got cancelled, and not even all of those aired. Serenity is the movie that carries on from the series that opened today. You can see the movie without seeing the series first and still enjoy it - I saw a preview of Serenity at Comic-Con in July and fell head over heels for it, and at that point had only seen one and a half eps of Firefly. The cast has a wonderful rapport, the dialogue is quick and funny, and the movie is an all-around good time. And Mal's dreamy. ^^;;

Oh, also: Serenity is the name of the ship, and Firefly is what kind of ship it is.

The show actually is pretty good Firefly that is. It's more like Star Trek then vampire slaying.

Mom got me into watching it she's the one who's more into the Buffy, Angel, Firefly stuff than I am but I do like Firefly.

THen Dad'll probably like it too so it won't be a problem to convince him to tape the eps for me.

^_^

Thanks

Uh...I want to say Fox or the WB. I think it's running on Sci-Fi Channel right now.

I was able to see the sneak preview of it earlier this year (probably back in May or June) because I have a few friends who absolutely LOVE it. Not only have I never seen the original series, Firefly, but I've never watched any of what's his faces work...Buffy, Angel, etc. I basically went in blind and honestly, I enjoyed it. It was full of cynical humour, climactic battles, chilling revelations...but while being slightly cheesy all at the same time. It's definitely worth seeing at least once. :3

It seems pretty popular in the reviews I've seen on my flist. What station did this air on?

Sci-Fi, I think.

AH! That explains it. Mom never turns that channel out out here in the living room and Dad sequesters himself in his studio to watch stargate marathons on it where we never go. ^_^

haha, yeah, I don't watch that channel much anymore either. Used to when they showed the late night/early morning anime movies (Galaxy Express, Iria, Armitage), but they don't anymore so... XD

I think they've put Firefly back on the air...just showing the 13 eps though. Catch it on sometime to get a feel for the writing.

Looks like everyone else has explained Serenity and Firefly. As for me, when people mention Serenity, because it's something I'm not interested in seeing and because my mind's woolly at the best of times, I've gone: "Serenity? Is that the latest hurricane?" several times already, before realising. *Headdesk*

It's wonderful.
A wildly implausible permise, but then so was Trek, but it's not the story that hooks ya, it's the *characters*. Just a phenomenal cast, hysterically funny one moment, deadly serious another.

This ain't no Trek, this ain't no Stargate. No Aliens of the Week™, no super-dooper laser guns, no transporting devices -- just humanity gone wrong after war.

And the ship (Serenity)?

I totally <3 that old rustbucket. ^___^

Still needing a Captain Tightpants icon.

You can get the first (and only) season on DVD or possibly tapes from some kind friend who taped it off the TV. I highly recommend it.

FIREFLY IS TEH BEST SCI-FI SERIES EVAH!!!!!!111ONEONEONE along with Babylon 5 and Dune and FOX NETWORK IS EEEEEEEEEVIL FOR CANCELLING IT!!!!!!! *seethes*

Firefly has nothing to do with the suckitude that was Buffy. It's *good*. The best way to describe it would be to say Joss Whedon watched Cowboy Bebop a few too many times and then got hit in the head with a divine-inspiration lightning bolt.

Serenity is TEH BEST MOVIE THIS YEAR OMG. The characters, not the science fiction or the tech, is what makes this fandom a masterpiece. And it's refreshingly low tech. No androids, stargates, or bouncing the graviton particle beams off the main deflector dish. Just a rustbucket ship drifting aimlessly through space, manned by a motley crew of penniless miscreants with a talent for getting into trouble, Wild West style.

Join the club kiddo. I was lucky enough to see a commercial for Serenity when I was working out at the club, but otherwise I'm totally in the dark. I feel like I live in a totally different dimension.
